Network Maintenance
PREVENTION IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN REPAIR. COMPUTERS AND SYSTEM MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT FOR ONGOING RELIABILITY
NETWORK MAINTENANCE INCLUDES PREVENTIVE HARDWARE MAINTENANCE, PROGRAM AND SYSTEM UPDATES, DELETION OF OLD USER ACCOUNTS AND UNUSED PROGRAMS, DRIVE OPTIMISATION (DEFRAGMENTATION), TEMPORARY FILES AND SYSTEM CLEANUP
HARDWARE MAINTENANCE
Computer Equipment
- Dust
Many computer systems are on the floor or in areas where they collect a lot of dust over time. This settles on circuitry and in fans and heatsinks.
- Moist air, in combination with this dust layer, can contribute to early failure.
- Blocked heat sinks can lead to overheating
- Blocked filters restrict air flow and lead to overheating.
- DVD’s, Floppy drives and Tape drives are affected and damaged
- Fan Failure
As data speed increases, more heat is generated and needs to be dissipated. This leads to reliance on more cooling fans.
- Drying lubrication leads to fans seizing.
- Worn bearings create out of balance rotation creating excessive fan noise and eventual failure.
- Hard Drive Failure
Hard disks drives have constantly moving components. Wear and media failure have serious consequences.
- Bearings become worn increasing working noise and eventual failure
- Internal Media loses its storing capability creating read errors.
- Peripheral Failure
Keyboards, mice, scanners and cameras are some of the affected devices
- Paper clips, staples, liquid spills and broken keys are common keyboard occurrences.
- Mouse motion balls become coated with wax and dust.
- Printer Failure
Printers require regular servicing to minimise breakdowns. Toner accumulates on laser components and surfaces need regular lubrication. Internal components wear and in turn create associated wear.
- Toner buildup in laser printers creates premature wear on exposed cogs
- Dust and toner buildup affects the quality of the print
- Lack of constant lubrication on all touching moving surfaces causes premature wear and increasing noise during operation.
